TME Education Uganda recorded a major achievement in June 2026 after students from St Elizabeth Girls School, Mityana, developed an IoT based automatic irrigation system with weather prediction during a seven day training programme.
The project used an ESP32 microcontroller, soil moisture sensors, soil temperature sensors and a relay connected to a 12V pump. By linking the system to the Weather Now API, the device was designed to irrigate only when the chance of rain falls below 40 per cent, helping to reduce water wastage and support smarter farming.
During the training, the girls built the prototype on a breadboard, tested it, soldered a working device, wrote C plus plus code and integrated weather data into the final system.
Their innovation won the regional ICT competition at Mityana College School on 30 June 2026, qualifying them for the national ICT competition at Trinity College Nabbingo. The achievement highlights the power of girls in STEM, climate smart agriculture and practical technology education.
